Workshop Description:

This 3 hour presentation will address methods for ethically caring for suicidal patients.  We will discuss what the ethics code for Psychologists says about suicidal patients, current methods for treating suicidal patients, risk factors and factors that may help to prevent suicide in patients.

About the Presenter: Peter Mills, PhD, MS

Peter Mills, PhD, MS, has been a licensed Psychologist in New Hampshire since 1992.  He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and has trained psychology interns and psychiatry residents in ethics since 1990.  He is the Chair of the Ethics Advisory Committee at the VAMC in White River Junction, where he is also the Director of the VA National Center for Patient Safety Field Office.  Dr. Mills is the former director of the PTSD service at the VAMC and continues to see veterans in the Primary Mental Health Clinic.  He conducts research in patient safety, suicide and ethics.

 As a result of attending this professional seminar, Participants will:

  1. Review the current APA Ethical Standards related to suicidal patients.
  2. Learn current methods of ethically treating suicidal patients.
  3. Learn risk factors and protective factors in suicidal patients.
  4. Have an opportunity to discuss ethical dilemmas they have faced with suicidal patients and share solutions they have found.

 

Continuing Education Credits:  
3 CE ETHICS Credits for Licensed NH Psychologists.  (Note: Credits granted are approved for all NH mental health professionals licensed by the NH Board of Mental Health Practice).  NHPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer Continuing Education for psychologists.  NHPA maintains responsibility for the program.  There will be a $15.00 charge for cancellations less than one week prior to the conference date.  There will be no refunds for cancellations with less than 48 hours notification.
